Internet-based phone services, including hosted voice and digital landlines, need both your broadband and your mains electricity. In a power cut they will not work, and that includes calls to 999.
What we do before we install
Before we install any service that carries voice, we ask whether you, or anyone at the premises, would be left with no way of calling the emergency services in a power cut. That includes asking whether there is a mobile phone with a reliable signal indoors at that address. We write down your answer and what we offered.
If you have a mobile with a reliable indoor signal
That is your backup. Keep it charged and to hand, and tell us if the signal at the premises gets worse or the person relying on it changes.
If you do not, or someone depends on the phone
Where there is no other way to call for help, or anyone at the premises has a disability, a telecare alarm or another reason to rely on the phone, we provide free of charge a solution that gives at least one hour of access to the emergency services in a power cut, and show you how to use and look after it. If you would rather not have it, we record that we explained the risk and you declined.
Keep your address up to date
The address registered against each phone number is the location passed to the emergency services. Keep it correct, and tell us before you use a number at a different address.
Things change. If someone in your home or business now depends on the phone, call us on 028 9099 1221 and we will look at it again. The full wording is in clause 28.3 of our business terms and section 6.6 of our home terms.
